From her training at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine to her diverse practice experiences across the US and New Zealand, Dr. Burke-Krieg has dedicated her career to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care. Most recently, she served as Medical Director at One Medical’s Senior Health clinic in Littleton, Colorado, where she oversaw complex care for geriatric patients while mentoring the next generation of physicians.
We asked Dr. Burke-Krieg to share more about what drew her to Systole and her vision for transforming women’s cardiovascular care.
On Joining Systole: What drew you to Systole Health’s mission, and what excites you most about joining the team at this stage of its growth?
I am very passionate about women's health and preventive medicine. The mission of Systole beautifully marries these interests. I'm so excited to start with this amazing group of women now as we're coming up with ways of reaching patients and educating people about their health. It's very exciting to have the opportunity to help innovate.
On Her Experience: You’ve cared for patients across Alaska, Illinois, Oregon, Colorado and even New Zealand. How have those diverse experiences shaped your approach to medicine and to connecting with patients?
My career so far has been broad and each opportunity has given me insight into different populations and the resources available to them for their care. Experience with different cultures and their values has taught me more empathy and patience. Working in underserved communities has taught me how to have a big impact with little resources. Working with the aging population has taught me the importance of active listening.
On Women’s Heart Health: From your perspective as a family physician, what do you see as the most pressing opportunities to improve women’s heart health today?
First, is to acknowledge women’s heart health for what it is, a significantly under acknowledged problem. We need to begin tackling this problem early, and this starts with awareness, and early screenings. Routine screening should start by age 20, possibly earlier in those with risk factors (family history, overweight/obesity, hypertension or diabetes). We also should be considering more of the tools in our arsenal: Lp(a), ApoB and CardiacCT for calcium scoring in the appropriate patients. More aggressive screening can help people better understand their risk and more appropriately manage with lifestyle changes and medication if needed.
On Patient Expectations: For someone booking a consultation with you at Systole, what can they expect from that first conversation?
My first conversations with patients are about connection. We are forming a relationship. Typically my first questions are really about getting to know the person (not the medical chart), then we can proceed with the medical history and formulating plans. In order to work together we have to trust and that comes from a strong relationship.
On Life Beyond Medicine: Outside of your clinical work, how do running, yoga, and time outdoors with your family influence the way you show up for patients?
Outside of work I try to “practice what I preach”. I remain physically active trying forms of physical movement and cooking! I have 3 little girls and I'm trying to raise them to see all of this as a lifestyle, not a chore. When we find healthful ways to nourish our body and fun forms of movement it’s easier to integrate that daily. I really think that being a mom has made me a better doctor, helps me be patient and listen and investigate more. Be more curious. Being a doctor has helped me be a better mom. Learning more about balance and what really matters in life.
Dr. Burke-Krieg’s emphasis on early screening and relationship-building reflects the core of what makes Systole special. Her experience working across diverse populations and healthcare systems brings valuable perspective as we continue expanding access to specialized women’s cardiovascular care. She embodies the philosophy that drives everything we do at Systole, and her passion for innovation makes her the perfect addition as we expand access to specialized women’s cardiovascular care. ❤️
